After a strong and swift response from the community, the East Haven Fire Department announced the name of its newly-adopted station support dog.

“He is an official ambassador for the department and the residents," East Haven Mayor Joseph Carfora said. The two became pals just after the rescue. "Riggs is an Eastie now.”

Riggs is a "fitting moniker that embodies strength, loyalty, and resilience," officials said.

“The East Haven Fire Department is deeply grateful to the residents of East Haven for taking the time to participate in this endeavor," Fire Chief Matt Marcarelli said. "Each vote not only solidified a name but also underscored the vital role the community plays in fostering a sense of unity and camaraderie within the fire department.”

The chief said the pup's "companionship in alleviating the stress and trauma that firefighters often face in the line of duty."

Carfora said he and East Haven Police Department Chief Ed Lennon "recognize the profound impact a support dog like Riggs can have on the well-being of firefighters."

As Riggs settles into his new role, the department looks forward to the positive impact he will have on the well-being of the firefighters and the broader community, town officials said.
